Recent trends in young adult literature show an increased interest in speculative fiction. One of its subgenres, dystopian fiction, has already been focussed on in the "Teaching Dystopia" session from August 2020. This time we will deal with another of its popular subgenres, fantasy.
We will look at how current events are reflected in speculative fiction and explore ways of teaching Patrick Ness’ 2011 novel "A Monster Calls" and the novel "The Nest" published by Kenneth Oppel in 2015. Since both novels are richly illustrated and since "A Monster Calls" has even been turned into a feature film, we will also discuss the use of multimodal texts in the foreign language classroom.
Participants will be invited to join a presentation of overarching concepts and practical teaching ideas suitable for grades 9-12 in both face-to-face and distance learning settings.

The conference will be divided in a webtalk and short interactive virtual classroom simulation steps given by Prof. Dr. Peter Hohwiller and hosted by Anna Schönbach. The entire E-Session will be held in English. It is not necessary to have read the novels prior to the E-Session.

Prof. Dr. Peter Hohwiller is Professor of English Didactics at Paderborn University.
