Teaching Young Learners Online

British Council online modules

The British Council and Pedagogical Institute of Rhineland-Palatinate offer are pleased to provide an opportunity for English teachers to complete online modules with British Council Teaching for Success certification. Active participants on these online modules will be given priority for e-sessions and face-to-face conferences in the wider programme of events with the British Council to follow.
In 2020 you can already sign up for the following modules:

1) Engaging with Special Educational Needs - gifted and talented learners
2) Engaging with Special Educational Needs - multicultural influences

Each module takes between 2 and 3 hours. After completing the online module asynchronously at your own pace, you will receive a British Council certificate.

Engaging with Special Educational Needs: gifted and talented learners

This module explores the different ways we think that children are gifted and talented. The participants will be introduced to some classroom activities and strategies which help to engage gifted and talented children, make them feel valued and give them the appropriate academic challenge.
By the end of this module the participants will have:
• considered the issues faced by gifted and talented learners
• investigated the different types of gifted and talented learners
• considered a range of effective strategies for helping gifted and talented learners to reach their full potential.

Engaging with Special Educational Needs: multicultural influences

This module helps the participants to consider some of the issues around multilingualism and language learning. The language classroom is one of the places where we can develop intercultural understanding and build multilingual societies. They learn to equip their learners with the tools they will need to bridge language and culture divides thus making learning relevant and effective.
By the end of this module the participants will have:
• raised their awareness of the issues and implications of multilingualism and multiculturalism on learning
• identified their own attitudes and beliefs about teaching multilingual and multicultural learners
• identified some characteristics of multiculturalism and multilingualism
• considered some of the linguistic and cultural issues which may inhibit learning
• identified some of the areas of the curriculum which could challenge the multilingual or multicultural learner
• gained a set of teaching strategies that will engage and encourage their learners and provide a platform for learning for multicultural and multilingual students.

Module access and certification is free for teachers working in Rhineland-Palatinate but numbers are limited.

The dates below indicate the duration of the modules rather than any obligation to be online at a certain time.

In order to ensure successful registration please sign up as early as possible in November 2020. Once you receive your access to the British Council modules, you will be able to complete your work on the modules self-access content until June 2021.

Please note: as the number of participants is limited, inactivity for several months could lead to a termination of your access without certification.
