Bridging the Gap with Assessment for Learning

An E-Session with Oxford University Press

Since the late 1990s 'Assessment for Learning' is a term that has become more prevalent in teaching, including language learning. Assessment for learning (AfL) is an approach that builds formal and informal assessment practices into everyday classroom activities to directly influence learning. It is recognized by educators around the world as a way of improving learner outcomes and motivation, and promoting high-quality teaching. Other terms used to refer to assessment for learning include continuous assessment, formative assessment and learning-oriented assessment.
This professional development pathway will introduce Assessment for Learning, why we should consider using it, and how we can implement it into our English language teaching practice. We will be thinking about Assessment for Learning in the context of summative and formative assessment and providing some practical techniques for trying out in your classroom. We will also identify and explore the seven key aspects of effective feedback, enabling you to be better equipped to complete the cycle of assessment, feedback, and learning.

This professional development pathway will:
Introduce assessment for learning (AfL).
Review key differences between AfL and other forms of assessment.
Introduce approaches to successfully implementing AfL in a language learning classroom.
Learn about the seven aspects of effective feedback.
Reflect on how to apply the seven aspects to your own teaching.
Equip teachers to deliver more effective feedback.

This professional development pathway will be delivered online over a period of 4 weeks:
Asynchronous introduction: 30mins
Synchronous input: 90mins
Asynchronous extension and implementation: 90mins
Asynchronous reflection and summary: 30mins
