Bridging the Gap with Assessment for Learning and Learner Agency

A CPD Support Pathway with Oxford University Press

This CPD (continuous professional development) pathway underpins the programme Catching Up after Corona with Oxford University Press (Aufholen nach Corona mit Oxford University Press) and shows how assessment for learning and learner agency can help learners improve their language skills English.

Assessment for Learning
Since the late 1990s 'Assessment for Learning' is a term that has become more prevalent in teaching, including language learning. Assessment for learning (AfL) is an approach that builds formal and informal assessment practices into everyday classroom activities to directly influence learning. It is recognized by educators around the world as a way of improving learner outcomes and motivation, and promoting high-quality teaching. Other terms used to refer to assessment for learning include continuous assessment, formative assessment and learning-oriented assessment.
This professional development pathway will introduce Assessment for Learning, why we should consider using it, and how we can implement it into our English language teaching practice. We will be thinking about Assessment for Learning in the context of summative and formative assessment and providing some practical techniques for trying out in your classroom. We will also identify and explore the seven key aspects of effective feedback, enabling you to be better equipped to complete the cycle of assessment, feedback, and learning.

Learner Agency
Learner agency refers to the feeling of ownership and sense of control that students have over their learning. It is characterised by a growth mindset, willingness to take risks and make mistakes, and an ability to take the initiative, to adapt, and to persevere. Learner agency helps learners to be more confident, motivated, and engaged, and also more effective learners. Learner agency can only develop if the learning environment allows it to: it is not something that develops independently inside the learner alone.
