American Futures: Ideas of Borders and Belonging in Popular Culture and Literature

Teachers’ conference in cooperation with the Atlantic Academy

The seminar "American Futures" takes a deep dive into iconic and popular images and narratives of American Culture. How have progress and encounters been described, dreamed about and feared in popular novels and tv shows? How can we draw parallels between these cultural products and current political and societal developments in the United States? Experts will introduce concepts and themes, for example the American Wild West or Star Trek, to participants and provide teachers with background information on the topics and how they can be discussed against the current backdrop of American decline and disruption.
